I had the privilege of joining SABC’s Lehae for a conversation focusing on the postpartum period, a time that brings enormous change. Many mothers experience emotional highs and lows as their bodies heal, their routines shift, and they adjust to caring for a new baby.
Watch the interview here:
What We Spoke About
The emotional realities of postpartum life: from normal baby blues to more serious conditions like postpartum depression and anxiety.
Hormonal and psychological adjustment: how mood, energy levels, and identity can fluctuate in the weeks after birth.
The pressure to “bounce back”: and how unrealistic expectations can deepen feelings of guilt or inadequacy.
Challenges with feeding and bonding: acknowledging that breastfeeding, pumping, and connecting with baby can be complex and emotionally demanding.
The importance of support systems: including partners, family, and healthcare professionals who help reduce isolation.
Encouraging help-seeking: reminding mothers that emotional support is not a luxury, it is an essential part of postpartum care.
Throughout the interview, I emphasised that the postpartum period should be approached with empathy, patience, and community support. When mothers thrive emotionally, babies and families thrive too.
