Bullying in Schools: Creating Safe Learning Spaces for All Learners

Updated: Nov 20, 2025

I recently had the privilege of joining SABC’s Lehae for an important conversation focusing on bullying in schools. During the interview, we discussed how bullying continues to evolve and how deeply it impacts learners. I emphasised that bullying is not simply a behavioural issue, it is a psychosocial concern that affects how a child feels, learns, connects with others, and sees themselves.

Watch the interview here:

What We Spoke About

Forms of bullying today: including verbal, physical, relational, and online harassment.

The psychological impact: from anxiety and withdrawal to academic decline and feelings of hopelessness.

Early intervention: why it is essential for schools to respond promptly and consistently to any signs of bullying.

The role of school climate: how a culture of respect, accountability, and open communication reduces bullying significantly.

Empowering bystanders: teaching learners how to safely speak up or seek help.

Collaborative support: encouraging strong partnerships between parents, educators, and mental-health professionals.

I also shared that every learner deserves to feel safe, heard, and understood, and that building emotionally supportive school environments is one of the most effective ways to reduce bullying.
