Understanding the Experiences of Single Mothers Raising a Child with a Disability in South Africa

Parenting a child with a disability is a significant journey filled with both joy and challenge. For many single mothers in South Africa, this journey carries an additional emotional and practical burden. In one of my published studies, I explored the lived experiences of twelve single mothers raising a child with a disability between the ages of seven and eighteen. The goal was to understand their daily realities and to give voice to experiences that often go unheard.

Summary:

The Weight These Mothers Carry

The findings showed that single mothers face ongoing financial, emotional and social strain. Many mothers carry the full responsibility for their child’s care while juggling employment, household obligations and the demands of navigating healthcare and education systems. The lack of consistent support often leaves them stretched thin, yet they continue to show remarkable resilience.

Emotional and Social Realities

Mothers described feeling isolated, overwhelmed and worried about their child’s future. Some felt judged or misunderstood by others who did not fully grasp the complexity of raising a child with a disability. Social support was inconsistent, and many mothers found themselves relying heavily on inner strength to manage the emotional load.

Navigating Systems That Are Not Always Accessible

A significant part of their challenge involved accessing services and support. Many mothers expressed frustration with limited resources, long waiting lists, complex systems and the absence of clear guidance. The need for practical information and emotional support was a consistent theme across the interviews.

The Importance of Support

The study highlights the need for psychosocial support that is culturally sensitive and easily accessible. When mothers receive adequate emotional support and accurate information about their child’s disability, they are better able to make informed decisions and create supportive environments for their children.

Why This Research Matters

This research aims to create awareness of the realities faced by single mothers raising children with disabilities in South Africa. By understanding their experiences, we can begin to advocate for better support systems, more inclusive services and greater compassion for families navigating these challenges.
